One aspect of NRL’s mission, is to focus on the promotion of safe gun handling. It starts with how we educate our next generation.
It is our obligation to pass on what we’ve learned from experience and training. Let’s focus on this as a community. Open the conversation with your spouse/partner, children, relatives, friends, neighbors, and co-workers on safe firearm handling. Even if the individual is not necessarily interested in the shooting sports, educating he or she on safe gun handling is our responsibility. The bond that can come from it, is an extra reward.
We recently spoke with NRL athlete, Nick Gardarzi, as he shares on his family’s involvement with the discipline of precision rifle shooting. As you know, part of the sport includes traveling and being away from family. A lot of us that can relate to the difficulties of being away from home. Married with two daughters, Nick has gain his family’s support in his shooting hobbies, and in more ways than expected.
I’ve been shooting prone matches for about five years and started shooting PRS style matches for two years now. Beginning with simply shooting local matches, I ventured into national-level matches after getting some experience locally. Of course, shooting national-level matches involves a lot of traveling and being away from the family.
I have been married for 18 years to my beautiful wife Lily and I have two awesome daughters, Gabby, who is 11, and Julia, who is 14. They provide me with incredible support, so I can pursue my shooting hobby. Getting ready to leave for my next match, my wife always helps me get things ready and pack, while my kids help me reload ammo.
The girls love to go to the range with me. Whenever the weather warms, we love to spend time with each other out shooting and practicing. Gabby is a perfectionist in everything she does making everything count, and Julia wants to learn everything fast. Julia has shot at least five local matches where she placed 1st in youth division, and has shot three matches where she took 1st place in BOTH youth and adult division.
Knowing that my shooting hobby does not take time away from my family, and instead gives us time spent together, means the world to me.
